Espresso beans at a glance

  • Did you know that there are actually no espresso beans? They are completely normal coffee beans that only differ from the beans for filter coffee in the type of roasting. Most sales packaging with espresso beans consists of a mixture of several types of coffee.
  • Stiftung Warentest tested espresso beans for the last time in 2016. More recent is an espresso bean test report by the magazine "Ökotest" from November 2019. A total of 22 varieties from practically all well-known suppliers were tested.
  • There are around 40 different types of coffee in total. The best known are the Robusta and Arabica varieties. The global green coffee harvest exceeds 10 million tons.

When it comes to drinks, Germans are considered beer drinkers. However, that is no longer true. Beer consumption has been falling for years. Another drink has long outstripped him: coffee. On average, all Germans drink 166 liters of coffee per capita per year. The trend continues to rise. Four out of five Germans refresh themselves every day with the fragrant delicacy. Filter coffee traditionally still dominates in Germany. However, as the espresso bean test also proves, this type of preparation is becoming increasingly popular in Germany. After filter coffee (65,7%), cappuccino (41,8%) and latte macchiato (39,8%), espresso beans came fourth in comparison with 21,7%. In some southern countries, the espresso bean is even the test winner.

What is the difference between espresso beans and other coffee beans?

The designation "coffee bean" is misleading because the stones of the coffee cherry are processed into coffee. Botanically, coffee is a stone fruit. The main difference between espresso beans and regular coffee beans is the roasting time. On average, coffee beans are roasted for 12-16 minutes, while espresso beans take 18-22 minutes. Because they are roasted longer, espresso beans look darker than coffee beans. The process takes place at a temperature of +225° degrees.

There are matte and glossy espresso beans. This also has to do with the roasting time. Initially, fats and oils come out of the beans during roasting. If roasting is stopped at this point, the espresso beans will be shiny. If they are roasted further, they lose their shine again because the fats and oils evaporate. An espresso blend usually consists of 70 percent Arabica and 30 percent Robusta beans.

Arabica has more acidity but less bitter substances. Robusta is less sensitive, contains less acid but more bitter substances. About 60 percent of the coffee grown is Arabica.

How do you recognize bad espresso beans?

You can do an espresso bean assessment yourself to see if you have purchased a good espresso bean blend. The beans should never be completely black. Also, make sure that they are not cracked, broken, or damaged. Caution is advised if you encounter a musty odor when opening the package. It is possible that moisture has got into the package and mold has formed. If there are large differences in color between the beans, this can be an indication that unripe fruit has been processed.

Espresso beans note:

If you have problems with filter coffee or if you often have heartburn, you should give espresso a try!

How healthy is espresso?

There are numerous myths surrounding the espresso. For example, the view that espresso contains much more caffeine than filter coffee persists. But that's not correct. For one, the brewing time is far too short (maximum 30 seconds) to get too much caffeine out of the coffee powder to extract. On the other hand, an espresso cup is much smaller than a normal coffee cup. Therefore, it also contains less caffeine.

It is true, however, that espresso tastes more intense because it is more concentrated and brewed under pressure (up to 9 bar). This releases more flavors.

It is also little known that espresso is easier on the stomach than filter coffee. That's because espresso beans contain less acid. As mentioned at the beginning, they are roasted longer. Acid is broken down during roasting.

Where should you buy espresso beans?

It would be best, of course, directly from the roastery. However, not everyone has a coffee roastery in their place of residence or at least in the neighboring town. Therefore, it is best to order espresso beans online. In well-known online shops you can find detailed information about the properties and taste of the various mixtures in peace and quiet and receive personal advice by phone, email or live chat. You can order around the clock and have your espresso beans conveniently delivered to your home.

Since online shops generate a lot of sales, you can also rest assured that the coffee beans are freshly roasted.

Keyword Note:

Never store espresso beans in the refrigerator! They are sensitive to cold and quickly lose their aroma there. In addition, coffee beans tend to take on the smell of their surroundings. Then it can happen that the espresso tastes like cheese or fish.

By the way, you can't freeze espresso beans either. When thawing, they absorb moisture from the ambient air. This leads to a loss of flavor and promotes the appearance of mold.

How should you store espresso beans?

Espresso beans are delicate. Make absolutely sure that they do not come into contact with air, heat, moisture and light. The beans should only be stored whole and only ground immediately before preparation. Grinding breaks the beans open and the flavoring substances evaporate.

It is best to pour the espresso beans from an opened package into a coffee can that is opaque and can be hermetically sealed. In an emergency, an airtight plastic container is also suitable. An opened package must be used within 4 - 6 weeks at the latest because it loses its aroma very quickly afterwards.

It is best to store the espresso beans in a dark place at room temperature. Make sure that you do not store the beans together with strongly scented substances such as spices or garlic.
