Tequila at a glance

  • Tequila is usually produced in Mexico. Only original tequila from Mexico may also bear this name. If the production takes place outside of Mexico or even in another country, the name Tequila is no longer allowed.
  • In different Tequila reviews can be read, that there are three different tequila species. The name the alcoholic beverage receives depends on the degree of ripeness, the color and, of course, the particular storage.
  • The tequila is basically an agave schnapps. However, there are different classifications, because not every tequila contains 100 percent agave. Some varieties are so-called Mixtos, which are also provided with other sugars. At the Buy tequila Attention should therefore be paid to the exact name on the manufacturer's labels.

Compared to many other cult drinks, the tequila is drunk with a certain ritual. The individual shots are enjoyed either with salt and lemon or with orange and cinnamon. These additives are necessary to take the drink's own sharpness a bit. However, it depends on the quality of tequila, because especially high-quality tequilas do not need these additives and can be drunk without any problems. In our Tequila comparison You will learn many interesting things about the cult drink and what differences there are in each species. At the same time, you can find out more about various other modern drinks in further comparisons, for example:

The story of tequila

The story of tequila started many centuries ago. The first production already took place in the 16. Century from the Spaniards. The blue agave is quite undemanding and grew at that time already on barren soils particularly abundant. Most of the fibers of the agave were processed into practical ropes. The juice of the plant has been used as a remedy while the pulp has been chewed. The first drink from the blue agave was the Pulque. During production, the heart of the blue agave was usually processed to make a distillate. However, this was viewed by the Spanish colonial government rather skeptical and thus prohibited.

Only in 17. In the 19th century tequila production was officially allowed again. In the same year, the distillate was named after the city of the same name, namely tequila. Over the years, tequila has not only become a national drink, but has also become more and more common. This is not least the reason for the cocktail Margarita, which has been received worldwide with great enthusiasm.

It takes eight to nine years for a plant to be harvested. It got its name from the French military doctor Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber, who was also an enthusiastic botanist and traveled large parts of Mexico around 1860. Visually, the agave resembles the aloe vera and belongs to the asparagus-like plant order.

The agave plant

What is tequila?

The tequila is an agave fire that takes its name from a city in the Mexican state of Jalisco, tequila. The production takes place in and around the city of the same name, whereby the production of the agave schnapps from the blue wheat agave takes place exclusively from the heart. It usually takes eight to nine years for the agave to reach maturity, to be harvested and used for further processing. The alcohol content is between 38 and 40 percent, whereby with exquisite varieties also an alcohol content of 50 percent can be achieved.

There is a difference between the tequila and the mezcal. The mezcal is an agave brand produced in Mexico. However, the pulp of different types of agave and other flavor additives is used for this purpose. The production is still in smaller distilleries and usually more in traditional craftsmanship.

The production of tequila

As we already do in ours Tequila comparison mentioned, it is made from the blue Weber agave. The French military doctor Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber traveled to various parts of Mexico in 1860 and discovered this lush plant. He quickly gave it the name "Blue Weber Agave". What is interesting is their appearance, because it is a bit similar to the well-known ones Aloe vera. Growing at an altitude of 900 to 2.500 meters in the Mexican highlands, the blue weaver agave needs very little to display its lush glory. Before the plant can be harvested, it needs eight to nine years. Only then can its heart and pulp be used to make tequila.

In Mexico there are fields where about 500 millions of agaves grow and thrive. Only 80 percent of these plants are used for the production of tequila. For planting the soil is well prepared and processed. In the growth phase, the agave plants need neither water nor fertilizer nor any further care. However, it is important that weeds and grass are regularly removed by hand so as not to affect growth. Only when the flower has died, the trunk is cut off, so that the plant can continue to grow unconsciously.

Now the leaves are removed from the trunk and left in the field. The so-called heart of blue agave, which has a weight of 30 to 50 kilograms, is the most important ingredient, because this is needed for further processing. The traditional cooking method uses specially built ovens to cook the heart under steam. In industrial processing, on the other hand, autoclaves are used which operate in a manner similar to a pressure cooker. Within 8 to 14 hours, the hearts of the agave are cooked under hot steam and pressure. The typical agave aroma is only wonderfully expressed through cooking, fermentation and distillation.

Afterwards, add some water to the shredded plants to squeeze them out. so that the sugar and the juice can be separated from the plants. This creates an 100% Tequila that contains no additives. With the Mixto, however, about 49 percent foreign sugar may be readily available and the export in special tanks done.

The leftover plant mass takes about two to twelve days to ferment. The clear tequila is produced only after the second distillation, is then directly bottled and stored in oak barrels, the storage depends on the classification. The preparation of the barrels is done individually and is basically based on the particular distillery.

Tequila Note:

The longer a Tequila is stored, the higher the price in the end. Another special feature is the well-known caterpillar. However, this is not in tequila, but is added to the mezcal.

What are the differences with tequila

Who likes to drink tequila will know how complex this alcoholic beverage is. There is now a comprehensive one Tequila offer, whereby the individual varieties can be divided into five different classifications. It depends primarily on the storage, the degree of ripeness and the respective manufacturing process. These things help change both the color and the taste. The following classifications can be found in tequila:

1. Tequila Aged or Reposado

This is a tequila stored in oak barrels and large vats over a period of 2 months to a year. The maximum capacity of the containers is about 20.000 liters, which must not be exceeded. The complexity in the taste and a rich aroma receives the Tequila only by its storage, whereby the aroma is influenced by the wood taste. At the same time, the longer it is stored, the darker its color becomes. Some producers who have been letting the tequila ripen for more than two months often call the Tequila Gran Reposado. As you in different Tequila tests can read, this is a Tequila variety, the first has received a legal codification. The Reposado can be wonderfully stored in old wooden barrels or alternatively kept in new barrels, as this speeds up the maturation process.

2. Tequila White, Silver / Silver, Plata or Blanco

These tequila types belong to the most original form, because they come fresh from the distillation plant. The Tequila Silver, for example, is an unripened tequila that is either stored on steel tanks for about 60 days or bottled directly into the bottle. The Tequila Blanco, however, is not very aromatic, but juvenile wild. The Tequila Blanco is allowed to age for about 30 days in oak barrels for some suppleness. However, then only a 30tägige maturation in steel tanks is allowed.

3. Tequila Gold, Joven / Young or Oro

The processing is similar to the Tequila Silver, Blanco or White, except that here additional flavors and dyes are added. The tequila Oro and gold is provided with the sugar caramel (E 150a) and looks very similar to a matured tequila. Alternatively, about 1 percent of the weight of oak essence may be added to enhance the aroma somewhat. These Tequila varieties are usually a Tequila Mixto, since a pure Tequila may never be flavored or dyed.

4. Tequila Anejo, Vintage or Extra Aged

These tequila varieties are usually stored in barrels with a maximum size of 600 liters. In order for the Tequila Añejo to get its excellent aroma, it spends about one to three years in it. Some manufacturers only leave this tequila in these barrels for a minimum storage time and then transfer it to steel tanks, as the costs for this are significantly lower. When storing in wooden barrels, it is important that the humidity and the temperature in the barrel store are kept constant in order to obtain a characterful Tequila Añejo. Only used oak barrels should be used for storage, for example barrels in which Scotch whiskey or bourbon was previously stored, as new barrels would immediately give off a woody aroma.

5. Tequila Extra Anejo, Ultra Aged or Maduro

The Tequila Extra Añejo is characterized by its three-year storage time, which ensures that it can then be bottled with an alcohol content of 40 percent. However, it is important that the tequila, which later bears the name Extra Añejo, contains 55 percent alcohol when stored. If this is not the case, he will lose too much alcohol during the storage period and may no longer bear the name Tequila. During the storage period, the fruitiness of the agave is lost and makes room for the atypical aromas of leather, wood, caramel and chocolate.

Nevertheless, it is a kind of cult drink, which is characterized by its certain sharpness in the taste. At the Buy tequila It is therefore important to take into account both age and quality as well as classification, as this is indicative of the aroma. You should pay attention to the following things with tequila:

  • Certification

As you in different Tequila tests The tequila production is closely monitored by the Mexican authorities. The bottles are labeled with the names NOM or DOT, which is an indication that it is really a true tequila. The designation DOT indicates that it is a tequila that has been produced exclusively in permitted Mexican regions. NOM, on the other hand, reports that only blue agaves have been used for the production

  • AROMA

The tequila, which is stored in oak barrels, often contains a pleasant aroma of vanilla and wood. Depending on the product, slight flavors of cinnamon or even chocolate can be detected. In order not to taste the woody aroma so clearly, the tequila can be perfectly enjoyed in a cocktail. For example, if you prefer the añejo tequila, you will find that this is a rather mild tequila, which can be enjoyed wonderfully pure.

  • 100% Agave or Mixto

In our Tequila comparison we have already described in detail the differences between these two variants. If you want an absolutely pure tequila, you should make sure that it carries only the name 100% Agave. In a pure tequila, neither sugar nor other additives are added so as not to affect the taste.

  • Age

The longer a tequila matures in an oak barrel, the milder it becomes in the taste. In addition to an intense wood note, it also receives appealing vanilla flavors. If you want to enjoy the tequila with its typical agave flavor, you should choose a Tequila Blanco.
