Flowering climbing plants are a feast for the eyes in every garden. A wall is quickly greened with it or a pergola is entwined with a fragrant clematis. They are available in different sizes. Some only grow 1 to 2 meters high, others reach heights of up to 12 meters. There are annual climbing plants and perennials. They also differ in flowering time, water requirements or care. At the same time, there are a wide variety of flower colors and some climbing plants also produce fruit, such as the vine or the climbing rose with rose hips. In this climbing plant comparison, you can find out what there is to consider when buying, location or care.
Climbing plants belong to the genus of self-climbing plants. We distinguish:
The scaffold climbers need a trellis for this, like the clematis, others hold on to a wall with small barbed hooks, like the Virginia creeper, and still others wrap themselves around fences or trees, like the ivy. There are vines that like full sun, others just partial shade, and a few do best on a north-facing side in shade. There are also annual climbing plants that can be cultivated very well in tubs on the balcony or terrace, such as morning glory, runner beans or nasturtiums.
A free-standing climbing plant also needs a climbing aid at the beginning. With the aging of the plant, however, the climbing plant forms a solid structure and can then hold itself up. This is the case, for example, with ivy. It initially twines around a host tree but overgrows it after a few years and may then also be free standing if the host tree is removed or dies.
These species have specially developed adhesive organs that literally stick to a wall. This even works on almost mirror-smooth surfaces. When the plant touches a wall or object, it secretes a liquid that it uses to cling to the wall. If it continues to grow towards the light, further adhesive organs develop, which in turn stick when they come into contact with a wall or an object. The best-known genus include the trumpet flower, Virginia creeper or the spindle bush.
Many climbing plants need a climbing aid to which they either have to be attached or which they cling to themselves. Climbing aids are needed for climbing roses, for example. Clematis or Wisteria. This can be a garden fence, a trellis or a pergola. The scaffold climbers are divided into three categories:
climbing plants: They hold on to other plants or branches with their tendrils. You only need very small climbing aids such as string or wire. Our climbing plant recommendation includes the clematis or the passion flower.
spreader: These climbing plants form splayed transverse shoots to cling to a climbing aid, rocks or other plants. They often have strong thorns or thorns. Our climbing plant purchase recommendation for blackberries or winter jasmine.
creepers: These form sprout shoots that literally wrap themselves around a support, a garden fence or even statues in order to hold on. In the wild, these are trees, bushes or wood. The most common representative of the climbing plants is the real honeysuckle.
Good frost resistance, willingness to flowerIvy

Also known as "Jelängerjelieber", hardy, cover root area in winter
Newly planted, it is still somewhat susceptible in the first winter, later hardy
Hardy, blooms with yellow flowers in winter
Hardy forms withstand down to -15°C,
Resistant to freezing temperatures (except hybrid plants)
Hardy but danger of frostbite when it rains in winter
Protection necessary in the first winter, then frost hardy
Virginia creeper with a Mediterranean flair, needs some protection during days of frost
This genus flowers for only one summer, forms fruit and seeds, and then dies. They cannot be overwintered even if they have ideal conditions. In its growing season, however, it forms a profusion of flowers, often fragrant like the bestselling climbing plant vetch or the black-eyed Susanne. Since they only bloom for one summer, they are very vigorous and you don't have to wait long for the flowers to bloom.
A special representative is our climbing plant comparison winner, the wisteria. In the case of perennial specimens, we distinguish the deciduous climbing plants and the evergreen ones. The classic among the evergreen climbing plants is the ivy. Deciduous climbing plants are the creeper, the climbing cucumber or the passion flower.
We distinguish between three different locations, sunny, semi-shady or shady. Not every climbing plant can cope with every location. Therefore, you should already make a pre-selection of the plant suitability here.
Climbing plants are often required as privacy screens. Here you should use annual climbing plant seeds as early as possible. Annual plants are very vigorous and quickly form a dense trellis. You can also buy pre-grown plants in containers.
If you need a privacy screen but don't want to do any major maintenance, you should attach artificial climbing plants. You don't have to water it and you're still protected from prying eyes.
Unfortunately, the Stiftung Warentest has not yet dealt with this comprehensive topic. Fortunately, there is plenty of literature about climbing plants, so even a beginner can read up on the right tips.
Plants are often offered at the discounter at the start of the season, where the climbing plants are inexpensive. However, they usually cannot keep up with a gardener's product. That's why we recommend a climbing plant price comparison, because often higher-quality plants are also offered cheaply in the garden market or on the Internet.
With the right climbing plant, you can green any bare wall, get a fast-growing privacy screen, or beautify your house, shed, or walls with evergreen and frost-resistant specimens. There are also a variety of flowering climbing plants that you can get in almost any color.
