The lightbulb heats the bottom of the container but not the lid, which is where the hot wax cools and contracts, increasing its density and causing it to fall to the bottom of the container, where it is reheated and looped back in.
• HISTORY The Briton Edward Craven-Walker created the first model of a lava lamp in 1963 and called it "Astrolight". At the end of this decade it had become a cult object of the hippie, psychedelic and alternative subcultures and is now considered a classic in decoration and ambient lighting.
