Every hobby craftsman has a drill in his tool bag, including various drill bit sets for wood, metal, masonry or concrete. There are often some made of HSS steel, but can you also drill stainless steel with it? You will quickly reach your limits here, because hard materials can only be processed with increased requirements and special metal mixtures. Hardened steel can no longer be machined at all from a certain degree of hardness, unless with a diamond drill, a lot of patience and good cooling. Our stainless steel drill comparison would like to show you the most important differences in this guide.
Stainless steel drill bits are not made of stainless steel, they are made for stainless steel. We distinguish different types:
Most drills, including HSS-E drills, are manufactured by rolling. They are not as sensitive to breakage as the ground drills. They also do not need to be supplied with coolant and are therefore also suitable for a hand drill. These stainless steel drills are also cheaper than ground ones.
Subsequent grinding gives the stainless steel drills their sharpness and allows you to drill more precisely. They have a longer service life because they are not heated during production, but they should only be used in drill presses.
We also differentiate between HSS stainless steel drills and solid carbide (solid carbide) stainless steel drills. The latter hardly differ from the HSS models, but they have a longer service life and therefore shorter processing times. Thanks to the better performance parameters, they are increasingly replacing the HSS-E drills.
HSS-E stainless steel drill advantages
Solid carbide stainless steel drill advantages
Stainless steel presents drills with a tough task. There are three types of drill bits to choose from:
Type H is the only option for stainless steel. There are various coatings to minimize wear. Titanium nitride with a golden colour, titanium carbonitride with a brown-black colour, titanium aluminum nitride with a purple colour, and cobalt with an oily luster colour. The latter are bestseller stainless steel drills and are best suited for drilling stainless steel.
Stainless steel drill bits come in many different sizes, typically from 1,0mm to 16mm and larger. Stainless steel drill sets are usually only equipped with the most important sizes, special sizes are either only available in a stainless steel drill professional set or you have to buy them individually. So you usually only find stainless steel drills with 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or stainless steel drills 8 and 10 mm. With the special sizes, such as the 4,2 mm or 6,8 mm stainless steel drill, you have to search a lot if you want to find them in a set box.
If you want to drill in stainless steel, you have to pay attention not only to the right drill but also to the right point angle and helix angle. They are important features when it comes to drilling soft or hard materials:
As the name suggests, the point angle is located on the head of the stainless steel drill bit. It ensures that the drill is centered correctly. An angle of 130 to 135° has been found to be suitable for stainless steel drills, as opposed to 118° for normal drills. The contact pressure is necessary for the feed. The larger the angle, the more force the drill can exert.
Stainless steel drills can be recognized by their elongated spiral shape. With an angle between 20 and 40°, it determines chip formation. Small angles are required for hard, short-chipping materials.
To drill a hole in stainless steel you need the following tools:
When buying, make sure that your stainless steel drill is alloyed with cobalt or is specially labeled "Suitable for stainless steel". If you often want to drill in stainless steel, a stainless steel drill set is a good choice. Here you should pay attention to whether only small diameters are available in the set or only large ones. If an important stainless steel drill is missing in the set, it can be bought separately at any time.
Both variants are well suited as stainless steel drills, but each has advantages and disadvantages. HSS-E stainless steel drills splinter more easily, but are easy to regrind. Solid carbide stainless steel drills require coolant, but are harder but also more expensive.
Anyone who makes a stainless steel drill price comparison will find that the roll-rolled stainless steel drills are cheaper. They are suitable for the hand drill and do not require coolant. The ground stainless steel drill bits are very sharp and cut more precisely. However, they should only be used for a pillar drill and with coolant.
What does the color of the stainless steel drills say?
With the stainless steel drills you will find different colors when you buy them. It has something to do with the coating material. So have:
When it comes to stainless steel, the Stiftung Warentest unfortunately does not find anything about stainless steel drill bits in addition to stainless steel dishes, kettles, etc., only something about cheap drill bit sets. However, this test report is from 2005 and should therefore no longer be used for an objective and up-to-date assessment.
Special materials require special tools. That's why you can't work on stainless steel with normal twist drills, but you need correspondingly hard stainless steel drills. These are available in different coatings and in different price ranges. With this guide we hope to have given you the most important information on the use of these somewhat different drill bits.
