Our comparison chart for 3D printer comparison does not replace one 3D printer testin which a special 3D printer test winner can be recommended. In order to increase the added value for our readers, we may link to an external 3D printer test of trustworthy sources. Only you decide which model your personal 3D printer test winner is.
When the first 3D printers were built in the eighties of the last century, they hardly attracted any public attention. Compared to today's 3D printer test winners, the devices were very expensive and slow. Technological progress means that the cost of the devices is constantly falling, while the properties of use improve. This also makes 3D printers interesting for private users. If you want to buy a 3D printer, this guide will help you to find the right model.
Basically, the term printer is misleading because 3D printers work on a completely different principle. Ordinary printers produce a two-dimensional image of an object or print out text. A 3D printer, on the other hand, creates a physical copy of a template. For this purpose, a computer-controlled print head applies powder or liquid material in layers. The imprint (better the copy) is printed on a printing bed and is created layer by layer. When it is finished, it is removed from the print bed and can be used. There are different methods for 3D printing. In most of them, the printing material is liquefied by heat and sprayed onto the print bed through the print head. The 3D printing is created from the bottom up.
There are quite a number of procedures today. In the 3D printer evaluation, however, only the FFF process (Fused Filament Fabrication) actually plays a role. Two thirds of all models for private users, including the 3D printer bestseller, use this method. A wire (filament) made of plastic (nylon, polycarbonate) is passed through a heating block and melted. In liquid form, the material can be applied almost anywhere.
The first 3D printer used stereolithography. In this process, liquid synthetic resin is used as the printing material. It is sprayed on and cures under the action of laser light.
3D prints are environmentally friendly as they save transport costs and packaging.
You can print objects in almost any shape right in your home or office.
Entirely new possibilities open up for artists or hobbyists, as 3D prints encourage creativity.
The material quality is getting better and better. Many 3D prints can already compete with injection molded parts.
Good equipment is expensive. Printed objects are also expensive.
It takes a long time to print. Corrections have to be made more often.
The size of the prints is limited by the dimensions of the print bed.
-There are still too few templates.
A 3D printer is recommended for visual artists and hobbyists. This allows you to create objects according to your own ideas. Hobbyists welcome the opportunity to produce spare parts or models themselves with the 3D printer. More and more parts are made of plastic anyway. It happens again and again that certain parts break, for example door handles or housings. With the appropriate 3D printer, you can produce the parts yourself. A 3 D printer is ideal for everyone who deals with model making. The possible uses are constantly being expanded.
A 3D printer purchase recommendation is based on various criteria. Depending on what you need the device for, one or the other plays the most important role.
The printing speed is given in millimeters per second (mm / s). With cheap printers it is 150 mm / s, with expensive devices it can be 300 mm / s, and sometimes even more. With the cheap, slow models it can take 2 - 3 hours for more complicated models to finish printing.
FFF and SLA printers are suitable for private use. Two thirds of all private 3D printers work with the FFF process. It's cheaper than SLA. You can use no-name printing material. The disadvantage is the lower sensitivity. You cannot print such fine structures with the FFF process. For this you need a 3D printer with SLA. However, they are more expensive. The material is also more expensive and incompatible. Every manufacturer designs his printers for his own material.
Most 3D printers with the FFF process use polyactide (PLA) or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) as the printing material. ABS printers are light and weatherproof. They can easily be reworked. However, they sometimes shrink after completion and develop an unpleasant odor when printed. ABS is a standard material, for example for Lego bricks or plastic housing parts. PLA is made from corn starch and is biodegradable. The material smells less unpleasant and does not shrink after completion. For SLA printers you need special liquid synthetic resin. It's expensive and you have to use the manufacturer's material.
This value indicates the maximum size a printed object can be. Experts recommend a minimum size of 15 x 20 x 15 cm. That's enough for printing medium-sized objects. Smaller printers have little practical value because they can only print mini objects.
When buying a 3D printer, look out for user-friendly functions, for example automatic calibration of the printing table. The printer should be able to show how long it will take to print, how much material is needed, and whether there is enough material.
To print, the 3D printer must be connected to the PC or laptop. A WLAN connection is advantageous because it works wirelessly. This allows you to move the 3D printer to another room. Multiple computers can access the printer.
For private users, there are currently more than 250 different models on the market. In the 3D printer price comparison, the cheapest devices are offered as a kit and cost less than 150 EUR. However, the printing area is only small and the printing speed is slow. At the other end of the scale are devices with prices of several thousand euros. 3D printers for the best results cost from around 1.000 EUR. On average, you have to budget around 800 EUR for a good device that is suitable for everyday use. The majority of the devices on offer use the FFF printing process described above. There are more than 70 manufacturers in the market. The most important are:
With 3D printing, the highest precision is essential. This is why the device must be cleaned after each printing process. This applies in particular to the print bed and all moving parts. With FFF printers, the nozzle must occasionally be cleaned of blockages with a needle. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning. For example, some printers require you to use rubbing alcohol. The room must be well ventilated.
If you don't want to buy the device, you can also rent it. The minimum contract term is one year. Thereafter, the contract can be canceled on a monthly basis. The rent is less than 20 EUR / month. This option is advantageous if you do not need the 3D printer often and it is not worth buying.
